I haven't heard that, but he didn't "underestimate" it. He actually said the surge would make matters worse.

Obama has committed a terrible blunder in meeting with Maliki, and if the McCain campaign has any sense at all it will crucify him for it. Obama has injected himself into most delicate negotiations -- something that is reserved for the President's foreign policy team -- with the result being increased pressure by Maliki on Bush.

Maliki has effectively used Obama as a weapon against the United States in these negotiations. Which is what happens when you get a rank amateur blundering into the situation as Obama has.

He should be chastised long and hard for it. I'm sure he won't, and if he were, there would be no news media there to report it.
