Hedge funds shop around for financing

Providing loans has long been one of the many services that the prime-broking arms of investment banks have supplied to hedge funds. But as the ability of banks to lend has become constrained by the credit crisis, hedge funds are encroaching on investment banks' turf and providing financing to each other instead. This breed of lenders is fighting for a slice of the USD11 billion in fees that analysis provider Tabb Group believes hedge funds will pay prime brokers this year. Securities consultancy Spitalfields Advisors Ltd has estimated the annual cost incurred in borrowing securities at USD50 billion.
Hedge fund groups urge SEC to let 'naked' short-sale ban expire

Two hedge fund groups are urging US regulators to refrain from renewing beyond next week an emergency rule to curb certain short sales in shares of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and 17 investment banks. The Securities and Exchange Commission should avoid extending the rule past its expiration July 29 or expanding the order to include additional companies, the Managed Funds Association and the Coalition of Private Investment Companies wrote yesterday to the Washington-based agency.
