Yep, that' pretty much the way it "should" work... although in general for exchange listed stuff, most "traders" call stock loan to check the status of a stock before they take a short position... this is standard practice. So it's more like"

me: I want to short this POS.
prtner: Yea... pos... can we borrow it?
me: call stock loan and see.
ptnr: they have to check around... hard to borrow...

etc.

My main point through all this is that people should realize that the STANDARD PRACTICE makes sense and proceedures and rules are in place. I know that doesn't mean bupkiss to criminals...they should be eliminated.. but the 'structure' is there and "shorting" in general is not just some counterfit scheme.
