My broker is TD Waterhouse. And yes I have asked them. Actually the response I got from the young fellow I spoke to was, "Yes , I cannot argue with the point you are making, but officially stock is "borrowed/loaned" Perhaps someone else can ask per my item 3 which you have disregarded.

"He settles it simply by taking shares from his available inventory.... " ... Apparently I should have added "and conveying it to the other side of the trade.". I imagine there is a system of offset both for cash and for stock, where only daily balances are conveyed.

I would imagine further that the other broker(s) would not distinguish between settlement resulting from a short sale or settlement resulting from a long. It would be of no concern to them so long as the settlement is made.

Every short account carries cash of sufficient amount to enable the short to be covered at current market price. Why the reluctance to call in the short to enable settlement to be completed ?
