In fairness, I think that some of it comes from wanting to give doctors tools they can use. Since my glucose numbers have started creeping up, I've been paying attention to diabetes issues. I see the ADA pushing desert cookbooks on TV. The more apt message would be "HEY, YOU'RE DIABETIC SO YOU DON'T GET TO EAT DESERT ANY MORE." But doctors are in the trenches facing rampant non-compliance with even the most gentle restrictions and figure that a small order of fries is better than a large one.

Personally, I'd rather see the messages addressed to those who will work at their health but they are, instead, addressed to the majority.
