Still, kudos to Katie Couric for acting like a journalist for once.

There are several competing impulses operating imo:

1. The impulse to build Obama up (by far the storngest)
2. The impulse to maintain some semblance of fairness
3. The impulse to 'gotcha' a candidate who has obviously taken a self-contradictory and untenable position on a major issue
4. The impulse to tear down somebody who has been built up

We'll see if impulse 1 is strong enough to supress impulses 2 - 4.
