New tech can eventually take over the whole market, but it typically starts with early adopters.

The early adopters in this case would be people who care a lot about burning less gasoline, that's the same market the Prius serves.

Also "the Volt", is not the same thing as "electric powered vehicles". The Volt has specific characteristics. Its market isn't those looking for a performance car or an SUV or a minivan.

My statements to apply to a lesser extent about electric cars in general, but they where about the Volt, not electric cars.

As for your growth chart -

1 - Its still a rather small number even at the end.

2 - Its relatively easy to grow at a high percentage from a very small base, its harder to keep that growth up once the base is large (eventfully its impossible)

3 - Its hybrid cars not electric cars.

4 - The Prius wasn't the first attempt at a Hybrid vehicle, and it started in 1997 not 2000. The chart starts when hybrids started to take off, not at the beginning of hybrids. Electric cars are not at or close to where hybrid cars where in 2000.
