I don't like subsidies that are specific as to the product. That is usually when subsidies fail. The best government help is one that creates clear regulations and market conditions, such as streamlined processes and lenient tax policies in a fledgling industry, similar to how they really resisted regulating and taxing the Internet in the early days in order to let it grow. I'd like to see broad, general subsidies to applied to the alternative energy industry that encourages the market to figure out what the best product will be without playing favorites like they did with ethanol. That's a better role for government.
