Also, Hanabal is thinking about getting rid of his backhoe, in favor of a smaller one he can haul with a pick-up. The current one is only a backhoe, and he can find smaller models that accept attachments, like post hole augers, and mowers, so that he can find more work.

That seems like a good plan to me, for a couple of reasons. One, to have the diversity that you've mentioned. And, two -- I think a lot of the available work will probably be easily done with smaller equipment, such as digging footings for additions, greenhouses, etc... (need smaller, very mobile equipment to get into some of the tighter spots). We've noticed a couple of the backhoe guys around here are working with much smaller equipment now and I think that might be why.
