Hitler gained power by appealing to the Germans' sense of nationalism. Hitler primarily gained power by appealing to the Germans' sense of fair treatment. The peace treaty forced upon them after WW I was quite the opposite and besides being extremely unfair really was utterly stupid and set the stakes for WW II.
