The reason why the Earth heats up "more" is because of the atmosphere acts as a brake to the Planet Earth radiating energy straight out into space. To re establish equilibrium, (the same amount of energy being radiated as received), the Earth gets a little hotter. The weather is just small scale perturbations. The big shock to many is the percentages allocated to radiation. At room temperature, most of the energy transfer processes are by radiation.
