NASDAQ OMX Announces Mid-Month Open Short Interest Positions in NASDAQ OMX Stocks as of Settlement Date July 15, 2008

NEW YORK, July 24, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- At the end of the settlement date of July 15, 2008, short interest in 2,632 NASDAQ Global Market(sm) securities totaled 10,977,290,029 shares compared with 10,268,345,038 shares in 2,633 Global Market issues reported for the prior settlement date of June 30, 2008. The mid-July short interest represents 4.56 days average daily NASDAQ Global Market share volume for the reporting period, compared with 4.92 days for the prior reporting period.

Short interest in 511 securities on The NASDAQ Capital Market(sm) totaled 203,924,618 shares at the end of the settlement date of July 15, 2008, compared with 177,888,504 shares in 508 securities for the previous reporting period. This represents 4.02 days average daily volume, compared with the previous reporting period's figure of 4.08.

In summary, short interest in all 3,143 NASDAQ OMX securities totaled 11,181,214,647 shares at the end of the July 15, 2008 settlement date, compared with 3,141 issues and 10,446,233,542 shares at the end of the previous reporting period. This is 4.55 days average daily volume, compared with an average of 4.90 days for the previous reporting period.

The open short interest positions reported for each NASDAQ OMX security reflect the total number of shares sold short by all broker/dealers regardless of their exchange affiliations. A short sale is generally understood to mean the sale of a security that the seller does not own or any sale that is consummated by the delivery of a security borrowed by or for the account of the seller.
