As you pointed out there, the soil holds a lot of heat too. The process of heat flows isn't one of seconds. It's one of days for the quick processes and weeks months and millennia for the slow flows such as ocean currents and ice flowing from the south pole to the fringes of Antarctica. Trees take up to 1000 years to go through a cycle [and even more in some instances]. Subduction processes and tectonics overall are measured in millions of years.
