The people in ANY system mess it up. No human system is perfect because humans are not perfect.

But the market has a self correcting system with competition, that's generally stronger than any self correction in other types of systems. "Generally stronger" does not equal "perfect" or even "always stronger in every situation".

As for social upheaval its often increased by becoming more socialist, since there is typically less opportunity and growth in more socialist systems, and because socialist systems encourage people to depend on the government, and to politically fight for their share of the pie from it.
