Most all stocks are actually held by the depository trust company, and then a series of book entries.

How do you know you own that 100 shares of CSCO you paid for?

A series of book entries says that you do.

Same with borrowed shares ... a series of book entries says these shares have already been lent, and can't be lent again.

It is just as reliable as the series of book entries that prove you own 100 shares of CSCO.
