How many times have we read about companies that release deadly toxins into our water supply or build an unsafe product and hide their knowledge of it, until they are caught red handed.

This has happened under communism on an even more massive scale. And the government didn't and doesn't do a thing about it.

I would agree that in the US government enforcement of pollution and safety stds has been beneficial overall. Not only to the public but to companies who benefit from not having to compete with companies with lower stds who thereby can enjoy a lower cost structure.

However, the Russian and Chinese experience would indicate that too much government power is VERY counter-productive.

Also there are problems with overly strict pollution and safety stds too.
