Dow Jones Newswires -- October 17, 1997 Ascend Shrs Up On Takeover Rumors; Analysts Skeptical By Mark Boslet PALO ALTO, Calif. (Dow Jones)--A pair of takeover rumors spurred shares of Ascend Communications Inc. (ASND) up 4% Friday, but analysts said both scenarios appeared unlikely. Market sources said the rumors speculated that Bay Networks Inc. (BAY) and Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) were eying the Alameda, Calif., maker of remote-access products. However, Lucent on Wednesday announced it was buying Livingston Enterprises Inc., also a maker of remote-access products with an established market position, particularly among smaller Internet service providers. Meanwhile, Bay Networks has its own line of remote-access products and plans software support this quarter for the latest generation of fast, 56K modems. Ascend's shares closed up 1 5/16 at 34 15/16 on Nasdaq volume of 18 million, compared with average daily volume of 10.5 million. Options trading also was active.
