Then you wouldn't mind if we take away the $13 billion per year subsidies that oil companies get and give that to alternative energy companies instead. In addition, you wouldn't mind if we stop securing the shipping lanes in the Middle East that get oil from there to here and force the oil companies to pay for their own security. Because if you don't believe in subsidies, then our military should stop doing all the things it does to secure our oil supplies. Those are direct subsidies that are not reflected in the price of oil. I won't even include the hundreds of billions we spend on wars in the Middle East because of oil. If you take the cost of all of those that our citizens are forced to pay, then the true cost of gasoline and oil would be triple or more than what it is today to American consumers. Then alternatives would be competitive on their own with no subsidies.

Right now, the oil industry is so highly subsidized that it is utterly ludicrous for you and others to say that oil is independent of the government and can stand on its own in the market. Nothing could be further from the truth. I guarantee you that if the full cost was reflected in the price of oil, that there would be a massive destruction of demand for gasoline powered cars and a flight to any alternative that existed. You'd see the car industry change overnight.
