fwiw Phenom X3 8450 B3 stepping can be had as low as $128 shipped. That's a 95W retail box part with 2.1 GHz core and 1.8GHz HyperTransport and oh yes 2MB L3 cache.

For comparison the fastest 89W X2 retail part is an Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0GHZ with 1.0 GHz HyperTransport and no L3 cache. You can get it shipped for about $10 more.

So the question is for the 80-100W TDP crowd which is faster in real world usage patterns? How much can that L3 cache offset an almost 1GHz core speed difference? I'm assuming the dual core would win in most scenarios now but the tri core might be a better future proofing option.

Though with sub $100 quad cores only a matter of time I'm not sure why anyone would be too worried about future proofing a PC. (This is where someone on the thread makes some rant about how I don't want to see sub $100 quad cores any time soon. Well I never said soon. I just said a matter of time.)
