He writes letters for people who were denied SSI benefits or for some reason aren't getting what they believe they are worth. Of course the people could do that without his help.

There are far too many areas in this day and age in which people are convinced they need an attorney. In many cases state and local governments supply free assistance in the appeals the "lawyer" would be making. ;^)
