The Australian economy is slowing down. But saying that it faces a worse crisis than the US makes no sense as the writedowns at NAB and ANZ are all due to their holdings of US securities. And as they wrote off 90% of the value, they can't lose more on this...

I am seeing more commercial space for rent and more signs of apartments for sale (i.e. they are staying on the street a bit longer). Rents are up though. Starbucks is closing 3/4 of Australian stores. But on the main branch in Canberra I saw already the owner has put in a request to change the shop front from wood to aluminium. Why be in such a hurry if they didn't have a new tenant?

The Australian and NZ economies don't have a lot in common.
