Ah, Jay, you're getting closer to the point.

Very few Americans understand the Taiwan issue, how immense it is to the mainland Chinese. Very few know the utter fear that the central government has of territorial fragmentation, that a few Chinese might be able to say "No, the PRC model does not suit me and it's not what I want" and get away with it as Taiwan has.

It absolutely terrifies the PRC leadership, drives them to distraction. Makes them irrational.

It is a fear that some very canny Americans starting with Tricky have exploited.

After all, what difference does Taiwan make in the big scheme of things?

Can China afford to let it go? Of course it can.

Will China suffer if it stays independent? Not one bit.

Strategic importance? Zero. No one would dream of building bases there and the Taiwanese wouldn't allow it under any circumstances anyway.

An island, at the end of the day, without much to offer except perhaps as a high-tech manufacturing platform. Big deal.

So why the big deal?

Simple fear on the part of the PRC leadership that others might take the same path. Fear of losing control. Fear, ultimately, that the merits of the PRC system might not stand up to close scrutiny when compared to basic human aspirations. No thousand blooming flowers for them.

My take, anyway.
