Snowy, quarter of a century ago I was talking to Alan Revell who was the boss of BP Oil back in the day. BP was in the CNG business and was thinking of a big expansion of the number of CNG service stations.

I was the BP Oil alternative fuels technical guy in New Zealand at the time. I was telling him to stop the project or waste a LOT of money because crude oil was going down and was going to go down a lot more and CNG was going to be abandoned by motorists.

Sure enough, for another 15 years, oil was very cheap again and motorists went back to the old ways of big engines and a big appetite for petrol and increasingly for diesel as engine technology improved.

I wouldn't put my money into CNG. Liquid fuels are much better for vehicles. Little electric cars for cities might make sense. But my guess is that little lean burn gasoline cars are better still. They don't need catalytic converters. They need good quality fuel. Little diesel engines are pretty good these days too. Fuel cells remain promising.

The best way to improve fuel economy is traffic management using auto-drive cars. Having ignorant [if not drunk] large primates in charge of tons of steel flying along at 100 kph or more is daft, especially if all that separates vehicles going the other way is a bit of paint on the road.
