Our oil consumption doubled since the sixties. Can we get by with half the cars we have now, if push comes to shove? I think so.

Also, in the last year there are incredible claims about new natural gas reserves in shale formations deep underground on US land, that can be economically extracted at current prices -- a tripling of the long term NG price will do things like this. And there is always offshore which has remained largely untouched -- see Brazil. Finally, solar will get a lot cheaper when all the new polysilicon plants come on stream in a year or two.
