My hearing curve is normal until I get to the higher frequencies, whence it drops precipitously and stays there. I have difficulty hearing high frequency beeps, shrill voices, and consonants uttered by women.

That's why I can't hear what my wife says without having her repeat it. I often make erroneous guesses about what other women say also.
