Michael, I remember having a similar argument over the 1% tax for people making over a million a year in California. The money would go toward mental health programs.

The defense for such an obvious soaking of the rich consisted of the usual arguments:

a) The rich can afford it.
b) Don't you care about the health and well-being of your fellow citizens?

Not surprisingly, the tax passed. This was years ago. Surprisingly, though, more "millionaire taxes" haven't been pushed through the initiative process yet. I thought if something as mundane as mental health can justify a "millionaire tax," then so can just about everything else, from education to roads to wildfire protection.
