The following excerpt is from a 8/16/96 press release located at cdg.deltanet.com

Later this year, GTE plans to introduce CDMA in its San Jose, Calif., market. GTE will deploy CDMA in other major markets beginning in early 1997.

Ron Grawert, executive vice president - operations for GTE's wireless business, said, "GTE believes CDMA is the digital standard that will ultimately best support our customers with future wireless applications, We believe CDMA will have certain inherent advantages over other available digital standards. For example, we believe CDMA has the capacity to offer our customers improved, static-free voice transmission, greater conversation privacy, longer battery life, and a decreased possibility for fraudulent use of the cellular system, In addition, CDMA will allow more customers to use their cellular phones at the same time."
