I think you have it pegged. My wish for a less vicious political process is probably unrealistic.

I've met a few politicians, several governors, congress critters, and candidates at lower levels of government, like at our Candidates Night. They all seem to be the nicest people, and look you in the eye, shake your hand firmly, and so forth. And it seems that once in office they can socialize with their political enemies OK.

Perhaps Pogo was right.
