The last thing you want to do if you have variable power generation is go off grid. The grid is your storage device. Sell when you have excess, buy when you have a shortage. If your state lacks such laws allowing you to sell to the PUD, vote to change that fact.

For many years to come, highly variable sources of power generation are going to be only a fraction of the grid source, so the grid is in fact excellent storage.
