We should have listened to Jimmy Carter 30 years ago; and the dems who wanted to put a .50 gas tax on 30 years ago and have been fighting to increase milage for cars for about that long.

With the neo cons constantly chanting "no new taxes" and fighting any increase in milage standards (let the market work is always their chant) it made it impossible to take proper action when we needed to.

Higher gas taxes would have forced people to buy fuel efficient cars and detroit to build them. It would have helped our oil problem and GM and Ford, although they apparently never could figure that one out.
