You are the one who wants to surf the net as an application, but that doesn't need the power of an Atom which has 8W of TDP versus less than 1W for the Geode. Thus Geode has higher performance per watt. This is the problem with these power comparisons without including the same amount of functionality. A 2.5W Atom is worthless without memory controllers, the NB, the SB and GPU somewhere. You include the memory controller in Sempron but not for Atom. Geode even has the NB, SB and GPU built in as its a SOC. Its below 1W TDP has to be compared to Atom with its included chipset. And when comparing price, that also must be done.

Sempron with a low power mobile chipset like the M740G is vastly more powerful than Atom with its chipset. Yes it uses somewhat more power 13W compared to 8W at full bore. But it can get lower by going faster into sleep states. You can reduce peak power by using only one DDR2 channel at a slower clock as well as down clocking the IGP. The 13W is for dual channel DDR2 800 with a 400MHz RV610. But if true low power usage is the goal, then Geode has Atom beat badly. Sure it may be 1/5th the performance, but it uses 1/8th the power. Dual 20W batteries would last a Geode powered netbook all day and all night (20hrs). Just plug it in when you go to bed (no need to shut it off) and unplug it when you wake up and use all day and night until you go to sleep again after plugging it in.

Just don't try to compare apples to fruit baskets.
