First off, I'm not on the 'rigged elections' bandwagon. Are there irregularities? Yes. Was Florida a clusterf***? Yes. But I think the days of 'vote early and vote often' are pretty much over.

I do think that a large section of Bush's supporters hear only what they want to hear, and have fallen for the biggest set of lies since Nixon. They're running away from Bush as quick as they can (even on these forums), but not abandoning or denouncing the smear tactics - yet. That may change come Election Day, and they may stay home in droves (double meaning intended).

And, I think there is an internal struggle in the Republican campaign, between McCain and McBush. Is that struggle one where John McCain is trying to tamp down the smears, not always successfully? Or, is the struggle within McCain himself, where he tries mightily to reject his inner McBush? Don't know. Sometimes he doesn't seem to have the tightest grip on the steering wheel...
