Pete, just for once in your life, try referencing the datasheets for real life measurements. This is what AMD says on their own website.
"The AMD Geode LX 800@0.9W processor operates at a maximum power of 3.6W (TDP) and 1.8W is typical at 500MHz, while the AMD Geode LX 700@0.8W consumes a maximum power of 3.1W (TDP) and 1.3W typically at 433MHz."

You see, Pete? AMD can't even get typical power on Geode down below 1.0W. So what is 0.9W and 0.8W mean? IDLE power?! Intel gets 0.5W deep sleep power on the N270, and much lower than that on the Z-series parts.

By the way, you're DEAD WRONG if you think Geode doesn't need a chipset. It will certainly need something if it wants to link up with any system components of the last 5 years.
That's because the Geode-LX doesn't support PCI-Express (still on PCI, I'm afraid), and it doesn't support DDR2 memory (DDR1 memory is now scarce in terms of volumes, and hence more expensive), and it doesn't support any modern display interface (no HDMI, or DVI, or DVO, or even VGA!). You think anyone would like to hook up their Geode laptop to a CRT monitor, Pete? LOL. :-)
Can anyone design a laptop based on Geode today without a chipset? Hell, no.
The reality is that Atom beats Geode so badly in performance per watt and features that no one would even consider using AMD's most useless processor in one of their mobile designs. Even the OLPC is trying to get rid of the Geode in their second generation - and they were the last Geode supporter still out there.... |
