if there is not a correlation why would the fed ever bother to change interest rates?

now look at the inflation and fed and unemployment rate reaching higher highs and higher lows through out the seventies as the fed repeatedly was forced to retreat due to low real growth and high unemployment.

then look at the 9+percent unemployment of 1983

the period 0f 1973 -1981 saw 2 full cycles of inflation ,each time reaching 10+ percent before it was firmly defeated in 1980 and 1981 on the 3rd attempt .
