Georgia shot down two Russian combat planes as the two countries fought today for control of South Ossetia, a spokesman for Georgia's interior ministry tells the Associated Press.

Reuters reports that RIA Novosti says a column of Russian armor has entered Tskhinvali, the South Ossetian capital.

"The fighting was the worst outbreak of hostilities since the province won de-facto independence in a war that ended in 1992 -- raising fears that war could once again erupt and draw in Russia, which has peacekeepers in the region," AP reports.

Update at 8:39 a.m. ET: Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili just spoke with CNN.

"Georgia is under attack. We have Russian tanks moving in. We have continuous Russian bombardments since yesterday," he says.

He accuses Russia of attacking civilians. "We are in a situation of self-defense against a big and might neighbor. We are a country of less than 5 million people and certainly our forces are not comparable," he says.

Saakashvili says his forces told him that they shot down two Russian planes.
Update at 8:46 a.m. ET: The Russian government's RIA Novosti news agency says President Dmitry Medvedev is holding emergency meetings in Moscow.

"Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is currently in Beijing, warned that Georgian aggression against its breakaway region will provoke a 'response,'" the agency says on its website.
