Read Roberts post #2232- you will see he mentions rule #1. I must give credit where credit is due, and this rule of his is probably the most valuable 'rule' I have stolen from him/this thread. Never keep a position in a company when numbers are reported. I cant tell you the money this has saved me. Do some comparing. Look at companies that reported fantastic numbers as opposed to companies that fell short.

I learned of this 'rule' just recently when I sold PAIR. I bought at 21, and sold at 29 3/8 just weeks before earnings were due. Needless to say, the expectations were met- the company did fine, and I would have lost several points on the good news as well... at the time it didnt make sense, however- in retro. it makes a lot of sense. VANS would have given me 1 extra point if I held durring numbers release as well.
