re national health in italy...my personal experience

our doctor serves 5 small villages where he rotates his visits....

each village has an ambulatory(walk in office)that is open for 4 to 8 hours 3 to 5 times a week ,depending on size.

no appointment is necessary.... anybody can walk in....first come first serve....free

if a patient is bed stricken (even with flu) house calls are the norm.

night service can be called in.(my daughter had a high temp at 1am,i call the health service only for advice...20 minutes later a doctor and nurse were at my door...free)

there little paperwork....in fact only for perscriptions and requests for tests and out side consultations.
blood tests and innoculations are given on fixed days each week ......some test are free others have a fee.

my daughter broke her hand at school....total cost was 50 dollars reimborse later by the school insurance.

our au pair had a blood clot on her brain in two days after first diagnosis she was in france to see a specialist....3 days later she had been operated on in Pisa and home 3 days later.

perscriptions have a small fee.

a group called The Misericordia, dating from the middle ages, provides ambulance and triosh in all county seats and towns....its a service staffed by paid doctors and volentary paramedics and assistants.
