The Sino-Japanese war led to plenty of unnecessary death and destruction, all because the Qing dynasty wasn't keen on losing control of Korea. Korea, at that time, was under Chinese control. Japan was intent on "liberating" it (Ha!, that's the Japanese version at least, lol). That was a war, and that was unecessary, and the Qing were, last I checked, Chinese. But generally, the Chinese haven't been known as exceptionaly warlike, although if you were at the helm I get the idea that you'd be bombing left and right. -g-
So in any case, all propaganda aside, I seriously doubt the Chinese would be coming so far so fast without the wonderful gift of human ambition, aggression, and as you demonstrate, narcissism. I not knocking narcissism, pride can be good, and it's clear that China has plenty to be proud of, and myself not worried that they are in any mood to undermine global security - too many mouths to feed, feet to be shod. Don't agree with their willingness to support genocidal governments (Sudan) that nobody else would touch, but any cursory look at US history would show that we've been there and done that.
I think the world would like nothing more than a wonderfully peaceful China, open, free, stable, leading to an era of endless prosperity, with arms extended, embraced as a big happy family, no need to eject HK students waving a "banned" flag because after all what is there to be ashamed about?

Although we continue to make huge strides forward in all areas of knowledge and science, unfortunately human nature stays exactly the same. It stays prone to avarice, hubris, selfishness, working against instead of with, pointing fingers instead of self-examination. Those things can lead to war, or maybe they can just lead to furious competition in sporting events or in producing breathtaking cultural extravaganza's? I can hope, can't I?
Best we can do is try to understand history, try to work together instead of selfishly, and in terms of leaders, kick out parties who blunder repeatedly. As in the current US one, which will go down as the worst...ever.
