Yes - but at that time, they were states, not nations. A state was a military leadership that set up rules, but I don't believe that the Vikings taxed ordinary farmers, or even made rules for them. It seems that they earned their money using long-distance trade, and spent the money by buying food locally. It seems to me, that there is still some pre-Rus culture present in Ukraine.

But I certainly understand the liquor argument - to me, the christianization of the Viking areas seems to look as a way to improve trade, and why trade more if that would mean that you cannot get what you want?
