skeeter,

I agree with you.

Republicans say many of the right things, believe most of the right things etc... about economics but don't have the political backbone and/or ability to DO the right things.

What could be easier than slowing the growth of government spending to the rate of inflation and allowing real economic growth to close the budget deficit, eventually run surpluses, pay down some of the debt, and then potentially use the free cash flow for some forms of investment?

What could be easier than acknowledging that we can't have an unregulated financial system when we have a corrupt and unsound monetary system that allows some people to rape and pillage the middle class and poor and also causes all sorts honest economic miscalculation. Heck just fix the monetary system and we can have freer markets without many of these downsides! There are enough people out there that "get it".

However, there is a reason that despite a recession, rising unemployment, unpopular war, credit crisis, bear stock market, falling home prices, rising inflation, a president that is considered an idiot, various scandals etc.... McCain (an old geezer) remains very close in the polls to a visually impressive young man with great speaking ability.

Granted, at the edges, some of that may be because he's black. But the core reason that non racist Americans aren't switching in droves is that with the republicans they KNOW they are getting people that mostly understand how the economy works, how business works, how to create wealth and improve standards of living, how the real world works etc... So there's always some hope they might do some good things. With Obama and the left they know they are getting another immature idealist without a clue that will do all sorts of long term damage if the republicans can't keep him/them in check.
