I think you are imagining quite a bit. Both are now calling for the UN Security Council to meet, which they have been doing since Friday, and that both sides should stop fighting. Both are calling for the US and the EU to step up diplomatic efforts. And both have called for a different peacekeeping force than is there now. And both have talked to the Georgian president.

I don't see the stark difference.

McCain: "Russia should immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw all forces from sovereign Georgian territory," he said in a morning statement.

Obama: "I think it is important at this point for all sides to show restraint and to stop this armed conflict," Obama said.

That's a stark difference. McCain is talking very assertively about the situation, while Obama is, as usual, trying to dodge the issue.

Now, it has been speculated that McCain is likely to be more bellicose than Obama.

Obama has ZERO experience in dealing with these kinds of issues, and certainly has ZERO experience in dealing with this region. McCain, OTOH, has extensive experience in the region. I refer you to David Broder's remarks on MTP today.

Obama is a rank amateur and his remarks in response to this situation reflect his amateurishness.
