You cannot give a nation of a few million who border on a regional superpower false hope. Pushing Nato to Russias border was damn stupid policy. Folks on the Bears borders need to take that into account when formulating their foreign policy. Folks tell me that Georgia expected US to intervene in some way. Now the dissolution of the friendship and the charges will begin. Ukraine needs to study this closely because they are not immune. Georgia is to Russia as Cuba is to the US.

I think yours is a good analysis of the situation, but I differ with you in that I think there *IS* something we can and should do.

Putin was smart to have made this happen so fast that America has no time to react militarily. But Bush should insist upon a return to the status quo when it is all over and should not allow Russia's actions to stand. It appears he has decided not to get involved and this is entirely the WRONG decision IMO.

Some idiot here today was claiming America was "imperialistic" in Iraq (in spite of the fact our actions there don't resemble imperialism in any way, shape or form). But Russia's move here is clearly imperialistic and the US needs to stand up and oppose it.

This is a huge mistake on the part of the Bush administration IMO to just stand idly by and let it happen.
