Actually, McCain has been extremely clear on how he believes we should be handling the crisis. Neither the president nor Obama has had any cogent statement on the subject.

"Senator McCain said: "Russia should immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw all forces from sovereign Georgian territory. What is most critical now is to avoid further confrontation between Russian and Georgian military forces. The consequences for Euro-Atlantic stability and security are grave."

He urged the Bush administration to convene an emergency session of the UN Security Council so that it could call on Russia to reverse its "perilous course". He also called for the establishment of a neutral peacekeeping force in South Ossetia.

Senator McCain has visited Georgia several times and his chief foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, has worked as a lobbyist in Washington to advance Georgia's interests.
