Thanks.

The best way to reduce non-renewable fuel consumption is to reduce travel. Using mobile Internet programs, such as dynamic ridesharing and telecommuting can reduce automobile use 10%-20%. Dynamic ridesharing are currently available and improving programs that take advantage of Internet, GPS-mapping and transit information for community transit and commercial cab and shuttle services. The dynamic ridesharing part adds the tracking of users who wish to share or join rides. Users sign up and are validated on the service similar to eBay and other online services. Fellow rideshare users can rate each other for promptness and manner. All transactions are handled through the network so that no money changes hands directly.

The advantage of dynamic ridesharing over common transit is the spontaneous nature of the system: a user can schedule routine ridesharing with one or more drivers. But if they want to change their schedule spontaneously, they just need to go online to drop their scheduled share, find an alternative time and location for pickup or connection to public or commercial transport. Drivers see the drop and new request immediately. The rider has multiple choices and the driver has guided information to make pickups. And all payments are done within the system on a pre-arranged cost per mile basis.

This same capability can be used within social networks, group gathering organizers, and many other programs. How many times have you left a convention or other event in which many people hop individually into rented cars or cabs? Dynamic ridesharing could be used to find people going to the airport or meeting place at the same time to share rides, cab or take advantage of group rates for shuttles.

Such a program might even be used for shared tasks: Have to pick up a few things at the store? If they are common items or you can find them at a local store, a routine 'shopping share' arrangement could be made with people in your neighborhood.

All of these activities save money, fuel, parking charges, wear and tear on vehicles and time. And they help forge community, social and business networks that have potential to develop into new social and enterprise activities.

Companies are working on dynamic ridesharing programs including www.piggyback.fr and www.erideshare.com are working on dynamic rideshare programs. PiggyBack won an Android development award from Google. ERideshare offers corporate/organization customized service erideshare.com. Nokia has said that they are developing this for their GPS-mapping.

We need to think beyond the dinosaur age of fossil fuels.
