Energy independence any time in the next several decades is a foolish idea.

But increasing drilling, and looking in to alternatives, doesn't amount to energy independence, and I'm not saying that is foolish.

What is foolish is the idea that we can or should try to get to a situation where we don't import any fuel or non-fuel energy. That's a totally impractical idea, and the attempt will have far higher costs than benefits.
