Why has the Northeast been so tardy in switching to gas heating? Was there a pricing differential that kept them using oil long after the rest of the country converted? The persistence of heating oil seems so archaic.

Growing up in Minnesota, I have vivid memories of gas lines being installed in my neighborhood during the 1960s. Minnegasco ran a steady stream of TV ads touting the modernity, convenience, and cleanliness of gas. My family soon built a new house with a gas furnace, and the older houses gradually switched over.
