Elpida on Thrusday (Aug. 7th) announced that its April-June quarter has seen a bigger-than-expected loss due to the falling of DRAM prices.

The operating loss has reached 15,622 million yen and the net loss reached 13,769 million yen. Revenue almost leveled off from a year earlier at 109,221 million yen.

Elpida spokesman noted that although the company's performance has started to improve, it is still not optimistic because the demand in the market has not seen signs of recover.

Despite the continuing finantial losses, Elpida plans to raise its capital expenditure targets by nearly 20% to $1.095 billion for its financial year, according to report.

Elpida will spend more at its joint venture with Rexchip and its Hiroshima fab in Japan.

As to the process technology, the company expects to begin 50nm DRAM production in 1Q09.
