So someone else put those words in his mouth? he didn't mean what he said in his debate with Douglas?

That argument holds no water at all. Contrary to popular belief, Lincoln was hell bent on crushing the southern states, believed in the inequality of the black race and was hated the Constitution. Anyone that spoke against him was thrown in prison without trial. I don't see how that qualifies him as a good president.
