I can't agree. Even the West had a large developed infrastructure for older means of heating. We had oil and most of our neighbors had coal when I was young. Natural gas was not available until a few years before I graduated from H.S. in the mid-1960s. This is Boise, Idaho. Not the biggest city, but then you also have Portland and Seattle with no NG initially. The pipelines came through Boise before they reached the larger coast cities in the PNW.

Almost everyone owning these older homes has converted to NG. Conversion truly is the right word. In today's world, we are disagreeing about minor details, except that it does show that the NE has been reluctant to change.
