I measured the depth of remaining oil in my abandoned tank by poking an 8-foot piece of 1X2 lumber down the fill pipe to the bottom of the tank. It was about 1/8 full, and the oil was clear. I paid about $1/gallon to have those 50 gallons pumped out before I dug up the tank. That's a cheap price to pay for peace of mind.

If the tank rusts and leaks with 500 gallons of oil, you'll have a very expensive problem.
